Whether you are a private pilot or a
student
working toward your license,
if you rent or borrow aircraft, you need non-owned aircraft insurance
to protect your assets
from the unexpected. The insurance carried by the FBO or aircraft owner
protects their interests – not yours.
There is no guarantee that the aircraft's insurance will cover you
completely in the event of an accident, or if they carry limits that
are high enough to protect you adequately.
You
need to consider factors such as your personal assets, earnings, the
liability limits you carry on your other insurance policies such as
auto or homeowners, whom you carry as passengers, and how much
insurance you can afford. Obviously, buying the most coverage you can
afford is your safest bet.
If
you own your aircraft, you may be covered by
your aircraft's policy, but commonly only if you are the only named
insured on
the policy.
